Quo vadis, DokuWiki?
Is DokuWiki dead?
- development activity seems to have decreased at lot
- nearly no communication on the Mailing List
- long term developers seem to lose interest
- no new developers join
Is that even true?
- I gathered some numbers to see if my feeling is right
What do the numbers say?
- Development (commits) and Developer communication (mailinglist) has decreased
- Plugin developement still going strong
- End-User interest is still the same, maybe even slightly increasing

New Plugins
Why is that?
- DokuWiki feels finished
- Keeping backwards compatibility and existing users happy
- requires high skill
- makes adding new “hot” features difficult
- it reflect the interest in wikis in general: Google trends
- We're not exactly modern PHP
Can we just be done?
- There are challenges ahead:
- PHP7 compatibility
- HHVM support
- We want to keep up with modern times and what users exprect from a moder wiki
Ideas
- Splitting of modules that are of broader interest to the PHP community
- using composer to pull them back in
- Rethinking our tools
- are mailing lists still the tool of choice?
- should our IRC chat be more accessible?
- Rethinking our development process
- I'm not sure how exactly to solve this
- Pull-Requests grow stale too fast!
